Remember when distance was a consideration before dialing a call?

Not so much anymore. Palatable long distance rates have dissolved the barriers. Now a call to Country Code 672—Antarctica—is only .69 a minute—incredible when you consider that the iceberg continent doesn’t even have a permanent population but does have approximately 1000 inhabitants in winter and 5000 in summer. (Wait, isn’t it always winter in Antarctica?) The point is that companies like Microtech-Tel, a cutting edge data networking and telecommunications company headquartered in Denver, CO, has now got the rates for long distance calling down to under $1/minute for most points on the globe. The exception seems to be warring nations like Afghanistan (Country Code 93) where calls are $1.70/minute or remote getaways like Niue Island in the South Pacific where election tiebreakers are resolved by pulling a name out of a hat and long distance calls are $1.90/minute.
